4.2 Using “straight”and “meaning” Interactively
The literal and free translation problems has always been debated in translation. The author thinks that we should treat this problem dialectically and agilely.When literal translation is needed,we should do it. the same is free translation. Whatever literal translation or free translation is,we should put the original text content in the first place. If being not faithful to the original content and only being faithful to the original form, that is not literal translation, but hard translation. Conversely, if being not faithful to the original content, only pursuiting of idiomatic translation form, and that is not a free translation, but the abusing the translation, or dead translation.
In a word, it can be literally translated, when the English title is distinct, directive and is not hard to understand for chinese readers. However, in most cases, English title has its unique characteristics.Completely literal translation often damage the effection of reading.for example:
